The Company's lead development program, BNP 32,762, is a proprietary formulation of the popular calcium channel blocker (“CCB”) diltiazem for the treatment of hypertension and chronic stable angina. Compared to currently marketed diltiazem products, BNP 32,762 diltiazem is a modified release (MR) formulation that combines an immediate release component that achieves peak blood levels within 15-30 minutes with a sustained release component in order to provide prompt and improved blood levels when they are most needed and sustained protection throughout the day.
It is felt that the earlier onset of therapeutic effect tied to achieving earlier peak blood levels will address improved A.M. coverage in the vulnerable early-morning period for elevated hypertension and frequency of angina attacks. Its unique pharmacokinetic profile distinguishes BNP 32,762 from other non-dihydropyridine CCBs in its class. As with all non-dihydropyridines, BNP 32,762 also has the advantage of offering a generally recognized benefit to patients with proteinuria and those at risk of or having already developed renal complications.
As a stand-alone product, BNP 32,762 is in late-stage clinical development (entering Phase 3) and is also being evaluated for use in various combinations with other antihypertensive drugs. |
